In the Stitchill Shawl, the strips are joined with a row of yarn-overs. The yarn-overs are worked at the start of a wrong side row in the first strip, and then picked up while working the second strip.
This gives a clean join between the strips, and gives the opportunity to play with different stripe widths across the shawl, without having to use intarsia.
To form a yarn over loop on the edge of the first (and subsequent) strip:
With the right side facing, work to the last 3 stitches. On this swatch I am working as for Stripe 3 in the pattern.
Knit two stitches together.
Knit the last stitch.
Turn the work so the wrong side is facing. Work a yarn over by bringing the yarn over the right hand needle from front to back.
Knit the next two stitches together and continue working to the end of the strip as directed in the pattern.
To start the next strip and work into the yarn over loops:
Transfer the three stitches placed on hold to the working needles, with the right side facing. On this swatch I am working as for Stripe 13 in the pattern.
Work a yarn over, by holding the tail to the back of the work and bringing the yarn over the right hand needle from front to back. This is a little awkward, but becomes stable after the first couple of rows are worked, and looks neat once the ends are sewn in.
Work to the end of the row as directed in the pattern. Turn the work so the wrong side is facing. Here you can clearly see the loops left from the yarn overs at the end of the rows on Stripe 3.
Slip 1, then knit the next two stitches. Next you need to pick up the first yarn over loop – I found it easiest to pick them up using the right hand needle but you could use the left if you prefer.
Knit the yarn over loop.
Turn your work, and knit as directed in the pattern.
After a few rows the join between two strips will look like this.
